As I sit here, contemplating the sacred convergence of the Winter Solstice and Matariki, I feel something stirring.
A sense of hope for us as a collective, as a species, as caretakers of this earth.
In this sacred stillpoint of the year, we gather bone to bone, breath to breath as the veil thickens and the land whispers ancient truths.
There is so much heaviness in the realms right now.
Old systems are crumbling. The outdated is gasping for breath, clutching on with a vice-like grip to destruction, to harm, to power that no longer serves.
But the land is whispering, louder than ever:
Let go. Let go. Let go.
This is not just a seasonal shift.
It’s a deep bow to the mysteries
To the darkness that holds us.
To the light that is returning.
To the ancestors who walk with us, and the future we are dreaming into being.
This is a time especially here in Aotearoa for deep remembrance, reflection, and reverence.
Solstice draws us inward. Matariki lifts our eyes to the stars.
Together, they call us to gather, to grieve, to give thanks
for our whānau, our ancestors, for the whenua beneath our feet, and for the year that has been.
These aren’t separate threads.
They are one great tapestry of devotion to the land, the stars, and the soul.
We honour those who have passed.
We offer gratitude for what has grown.
And we plant seeds big, bold, hope-filled seeds for what’s to come.
We are being asked to slow down.
To strip back.
To return to what really matters.
We must listen to the land.
We must come home to ourselves to who we are and what we stand for.
This is legacy work.
What will they say of us when we are gone?
Let this be a time of sacred pause.
Let this be a time of fierce devotion.
Let us reconnect to our people, our purpose, our planet and be unapologetic about it.
Be bold with it.
Think big.
Let this be a time of hope.
The fire still burns, and the stars are rising.
Ngā mihi o Matariki me te Hōtoke.
May we walk forward rooted, radiant, and deeply devoted.
